A Soldier

A Soldier

He rose to the occasion
When a nation called his name,

This soldier was my brother.

My brother left us that summer

Leaving all of us in pain.

Wasn’t our war.

Wasn’t our fight

I told him so, but he said

That’s not right

We are a part of the USA

We have to do it the United way.
He never questioned
He never faltered
He journeyed far from home

Leaving his young wife and

His child a lone
He never asked them, why?
He said not a word.
So young and brave my brother

Marched on, He didn't have to go
He could have stayed,
but he never questioned why
He only gave.

He rose to the occasion
When the Captain called his name,
Not once did he ever questioned
or ever faltered
Though nervous and afraid
He gave it all he had.

He served time in the army just like

Old dad.
My brother left us that warm beautiful

Sad Summer Day, Uncle Sam took him away
His mind was on the battle
Yet his heart was far away,
He could hear Mama calling him

As he flew through the air

Mama saw him get blown from the

Tank she jumped up and said my

Boys been hurt.

I wasn’t there when it happened

But my siblings was still home

They tell me a few hours later

He called on the phone.
Yes Uncle Sam took my brother

While he was yet in his youth.

To fight a war,

He was taken from his safe haven

Our mama’s home, our happy place
Where all the children in

The neighborhood came to play.

Mama never learned how to send the

Children away. See folks without

Shelter sometimes came to stay.

And now he's gone,
To another place in time,

My brother came back

But he left his mind behind.
So far from home he did roam

I wanted so bad to strike out

To Uncle Sam.

I wanted to tell him to fight his own

Wars, to leave my brother alone,

But I was but a child crying because

My big brother was leaving home.
He left that day, travel where the

Brave and gallant boys became Men

Where their youth disappear came

Back full grown, young in body

But old in soul, broken spirited

The ones that came back at all.

When I looked in his eyes I couldn’t feel

His soul.

What happened to my brother?

He left with a heart of gold.

He rose to the occasion
When the angels took his hand and

Called his name
for mama had stood praying

When she saw him that day

Flying through the air

They tell me that was the fist time

They ever heard my mama rebuked the

Devil and told him not today.

Get away get away, Lawd

Don’t let him take my son away.

He never questioned
He never faltered
He surrenders up his youth
And all he might have been.

And once his youth was gone,

They sent him home
With tears and memories
We carry on.
Never to forget what they have done,
Our hearts will not forget
our gallant brother and mama son.
Through our tears,
A nation carries on.

"I dedicate this poem to all the Soldiers and the families that will always remember them. The gates of Heaven never open as wide as when they open for a soldier."
