A while ago we had a little tug boat with a 6-71 in it that we turned into a 4-71 cuz it decided to vomit its last two pistons... so the engineer of the fleet pulled the two injectors, both rocker arms, and the valves and she ran... smoked like a son a of a bitch, but never the less ran!

Yeah, it was a sad day. But, it was also a lot on GM too... They sold Detroit because they saw no further profit gain in an engine that had too many restrictions on it. It was like one of those arrangements that you put too much in, but you don't get enough back out to cover your costs.

That's very sad. I hate that Detroit Diesel got bought out and stopped making light duty engines.

Your right, Detroit Diesels do not suck, but you have to remember, Detroit's loved diesel. They had horrible gas mileage. So that, and the multiple saddening EPA laws that were passed, is what really killed the Detroit.

You said it. I know of 12v71 Detroit than was in a logging yarder. the operaters said their was something slightly off about it for two years. When they finally tore down the engine, they found out that it has thrown two piston and rod assembelys through the block into the crankcase. It ran like that for two years!!!!! Detroits are tough as fucken nails!!
