Actually there is a remake or summary of some sort coming out. I think it's gonna be like 4 feature length films. First one comes out Nov. 2009. called Evangelion 1.0. Netflix that crap now damnit!

The pain was a side effect of the interface. And since (mild spoiler alert) every pilot was emotionally and physically matched to their specific Eva unit, the closer the bond, the more pain they felt. It's supposed to be like returning to the mother's womb. That meant that to be a good pilot, you had to feel the pain - otherwise you weren't interfacing well with your Eva. It was also symbolic of giving yourself up to the Eva and their purpose.

Technically the EVAs are not mechanical, they are organic. Therefore calling the EVAs mechs is incorrect, giant cyborgs would be more accurate. Thats why the pilots are inserted into a place close to the EVA's backbone so they can interface with its nervous system.
