A Symphony in one movement - perhaps they will all be like this one day? Somebody once said listening to Sibelius is like going out for a walk but not necessarily ending up where you started from - I like that. Fabulous piece - like the earthy No4 myself but not a bad one among them for my money - thanks for the posting

Best symphony of Sibelius, or probably the eight was even better (sibelius wife said so) but composer destroyed it. And E-P Salonen is a real genius, both in composing and in conducting. And Stockholms Berwaldhallen its much better concerthall than our Finlandia-House in Helsinki, we really need the new musichouse!

My preceding comment looks like a non sequitur. Actually, it's misplaced--it should appear as a reply to the earliest comment below, in which nosiesnetnieuws wrote: "This symphony never fails to deeply touch me. Especially the opening Adagio (i.e., the above) sounds like nature waking."

Yes, but one must marvel at how elegantly Sibelius creates that impression, as opposed to, say the way Mahler conveyed it in his Third Symphony!

The music of Sibelius is absolutely genuine, devoid of academic displays, the mirror of Nature. My favourite composer along with Šostakovič.
