Darlene Love's performance of this song is strong. I'd have to say its better than the vid with Mary Wilson and the Four Tops. Maybe the Four Tops should've backed Darlene Love on this show.

I thought Tina Turner's version of this song was unbeatable - I stand corrected. Darlene has her beat! And congrats to Paul & band for duplicating Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" on stage. Not an easy thing to do. What a career she could have had if Phil hadn't had her in an exclusive contract for years. So sad. Glad to see she is having steady work these days. One of my all-time favorite singers, she can rock with the best of them.

doo58wop - I agree with you 100%. Darlene Love's roots are from Gospel and her strong and powerful voice allows her to "belt out" her songs. I think she is right up there with Aretha, Patti LaBelle, Mavis Staples, and Arlene Smith, former lead singer of the Chantels. She is a great performer and a terrific lady.

tracyhillroad: Thanks for reminding me of Arlene Smith. The Chantels' version of "Maybe" is one of my all-time faves. Saw her on a PBS special a few years ago; like Darlene, her voice is still as powerful as back in the '50's, if not more so. You name a few of favorite divas as well.

And for that alone, I envy you, sir. I would have LOVED to hear that live in that studio. The sounds must have been bouncing off of those walls like there was no tomorrow.
