A great collection of NS and CN trains today from catching the CN "A-Train" to the hotshot mid-evening TripleCrown on the NS. My first full day of railfanning since August 2nd, 2008. Shot #1 - 9:00 a.m. CN A431 (Memphis, TN - Decatur, IL) with an all-IC SD70 lashup today. I didn't expect him to come through before I got down at WABIC so the first shot was taken in my van at the Eldorado Street crossing. The second shot is at the Pershing Road underpass as the crew disconnects the engines from the cars and heads back into the yard for servicing. IC SD70 1036 IC SD70 1034 Shot #2 - 9:30 a.m. NS 33Q (Decatur, IL - St. Louis, MO) has two C40-9Ws, that's nice, right? Until the KCS GP40s are behind the two NS units, which is a ULTIMATE surprise, I'm not kidding. Seeing these on NS here are RARE. These KCS GP40s are bound for the KCS yard in St. Louis. NS Dash 9-40CW 9270 NS Dash 9-40CW 9592 KCS GP40-3 2824 KCS GP40-2 3151 KCS GP40-3 2810 Shot #3 - 10:10 a.m. After dropping off cars to Tate & Lyle, NS 1633 has about 8 cars to drop off for CSX in their yard. NS SD40-2 1633 Shot #4 - 2:30 p.m. NS 301 (Decatur, IL - St. Louis, MO) heads out after experiencing a horrific derailment that delayed three trains in the yard. 293 (autorack train going to the UP) had gone out first, then Dispatcher CMW gave 301 the go-ahead since his train was shorter than W5N. 301 has Conductor Smith. NS SD70 2569 NS Dash 9-40CW 9118 Shot #5 - 2:40 p.m. NS W5N [extra 35N] (Conway, PA - Madison, IL) follows 301 with Conductor Brooks and a very awesome engineer. They gave us a couple of long blows and certainly, did not waste ANY time with this very long train bound for the TRRA in Madison, Illinois. NS Dash 9-40CW 9970 NS Dash 9-40CW 8942 Shot #6 - 5:20 p.m. Well after going to Dairy Queen for a great early dinner and running some errands, came back to Wabic and saw a signal for NS 398 (Kansas City, MO - Decatur, IL). Has a couple C40-9Ws, nothing too special. NS Dash 9-40CW 8930 NS Dash 9-40CW 8959 Shot #7 - 5:35 p.m. CN L550 (Decatur, IL - Mattoon, IL), aka the Mattoon Turn, heads past WABIC with Conductor McDonald and a decent 3-unit BNSF lashup. Too bad the CN didn't use those ICs from A431 to pull this south, that would've been BETTER! Anyway, they'll drop off this grain train to Mattoon's yard and then come back up light engines, and BNSF 6331 will lead. By the way, yes, that 6331 is NEW. :) BNSF ES44AC 5947 BNSF SD70MAC 9676 BNSF ES44AC 6331 Shot #8 - 6:30 p.m. NS 35N (Conway, PA - Madison, IL) now heads southbound with a nice lashup. As 35N leaves, he meets 32Q. NS/LMS Dash 8-40CW 8461 NS Dash 9-40C 8806 Shot #9 - 6:40 p.m. As soon as NS 35N cleared the diamond, NS 32Q (St. Louis, MO - Decatur, IL) now heads over the diamond and is bound for the yard. NS 255 is waiting to leave down at the WABIC outbound signals. 32Q has Conductor Swank. NS SD70M 2625 NS ES40DC GEVO 7542 Shot #10 - 7:00 p.m. Wrapping up the day with one of the hottest NS TripleCrown trains on the NS here, NS 255 (Detroit, MI - Voltz, MO) rattles the interlocker with this long TripleCrown bound for Missouri. And it was great to end the day with a great leader on this train!
