Impetum fecerunt unanimes - John Sheppard (1515 - 1559) Catholic music from the court of Mary 1BackThis piece is taken from the plainsong and is sung as a cantus firmus within the polyphony by a low tenor or baritone voice pitched next above the bass composition. It is set broadly in even notes ('monorhythmic'), a procedure which would permit the participation of even those priests of the choir who (if any) could read no polyphonic notation, but only plainsong.
