An EFiX Boot Device unboxing and abbreviated walk-through.

This is the EFiX Boot Device, available at (http://www.efi-x.com/). This device plugs into your motherboard via an onboard USB header and boots like an attached USB hard disk. When coupled with a motherboard that supports, but is not flashed with, a EFI bios, it will actually trick system software into believing it is running on a motherboard that IS flashed with an EFI bios. I am sure there are many great uses for such a product, but the particular use I am going to discuss in this video is how this device can turn a correctly built x86 PC into a fully operational and maintenance-free Intel-Mac. This video is a follow-up from a discussion on the Dyxum (http://www.dyxum.com/) forums about computer requirements when dealing with the raw files of the latest generation dSLRs. These files are getting quite large, and maintaing a smooth and productive workflow is getting tougher and tougher. The general consensus was that, while an OSX machine would be arguably superior than a Vista or XP-based machine, but the cost of a decently built Mac was entirely unacceptable. This is not the place for an OS war, so please refrain in the comments. This decision was made on a few factors: OSX is lighter weight than Vista, leaving more system resources for productive uses. XP was a strong candidate, as it is a very stable and relatively light-weight operating system, but it is reaching it's end of life in very short order. A Unix-based was also considered, but a main-stream OS was favored for ease of use and support. Granted, an OSX machine created in this way can not be sent to Apple for repairs, but if you built it yourself, it is easy enough to replace parts, and if they are the correct parts, there will be no compatibility issues at the base. This is a computer I built for my mother and decided to experiment with. This video was edited on this machine, and after a little over a week (the video was shot over a week ago) the machine is running flawlessly. She takes updates like a champ, and runs like a top. VMWare Fusion handles some of her XP-only applications seamlessly in the background with Unity. This really is beautiful. Please disregard any technical mistakes in this video. I am not a hardware engineer, and if I get some nuances wrong, so be it. Close enough for government work. To get the device to work on your machine, consult your motherboard's user manual on changing boot devices. The name of the device is the "EFiX Booting Device," and the correct area in my Bios was (once inside the Bios) Advanced Settings, Boot Device Priority (move the EFiX Booting Device to the top of the list). Restart the machine with the OSX install DVD in the drive and your good. Since shooting this video EFiX has listed EFiX USA as the official US distributor. However, there were reports of this company, it's parent company, and/or it's billing house being connected with fraudulent services. As such, I would steer clear of them untill there have been confirmed reports of deliveries from this distributor. Thank you. Enjoy.
