"Monteverdi's setting of 'Si dolce il tormento', one of the numerous solo settings of this text in the early seventeenth century, clearly demonstrates the composer's interest in the canzonetta form. [...] Through his subtle musical treatment of the poetic form, phrasing, and subject matter of 'Si dolce il tormento', Monteverdi, not for the first time in his career, proved that the canzonetta, no matter how crude or popular in style, was capable of serious expression both within the framework of large-scale forms and simply by itself." - Cory Michael Gavito ___ Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor L'Arpeggiata, conducted by Christina Pluhar This work will appear (in a studio version) in the album "Monteverdi - Teatro d'Amore", with Philippe Jaroussky, Núria Rial, Cyril Auvity, Xavier Sabata, and L'Arpeggiata conducted by Christina Pluhar, that will be released by Virgin Classics in January 2009. ___ Marc D.
