UPDATE: 8 men have been areested in connection with the crime. Here are some of the suspects Clinton Mogg Jr Craig Calderwood Solomon Beyene http://www.facebook.com/people/Solomon-Beyene/1624223210 Aman Kassaye http://www.facebook.com/people/Aman-Kassaye/100000016786271 Two well dressed, armed men, aged in their 30s and with London accents stole jewellery worth almost £40m from a Mayfair jewellers Graff's, in what is believed to be the biggest Jewelry heist in British history it emerged today. The extent of the heist was kept secret for nearly a week but police have revealed that the items stolen were worth £40m, dwarfing Britain's previous biggest diamond jewellery robbery, in 2003, when items worth £23m were stolen, also from Graff's. Therefore the idea of it being an inside job is not far away. I assume, it was kept secret to allow police to follow any leads on it being an inside job. The robbery has been extraordinarily well conceived and executed. The events of the robbery are as follows: The pair were said to have hired a professional make-up artist to disguise themselves with liquid latex in the hours before they escaped. The 29-year-old make-up artist believed he was transforming them for a pop video and altered their hair colour and skin tone in a four-hour session that cost £450/ $744. Amazingly, it is the same make up artist studio that unwittingly provided disguises for the gang involved in the 2006 £53m Securitas depot in Kent. (The make up artist is now under police guard due to fears of assassination.) They took a black taxicab from the make up session and were dropped off at Graff Diamonds in central London, last Thursday afternoon at 4.40pm. They strolled past a security guard and then turned handguns on the staff, briefly taking a woman employee hostage. Police released images of some of the 43 items of stolen jewellery, including a pair of white round diamond double-hoop earrings, a yellow diamond flower necklace, a platinum white Marquise diamond ring and a men's chronograph 45mm watch. Experts say the haul is likely to be re-cut and sold in China. Detectives believe the raiders targeted the most expensive items in the store. One officer said: They knew exactly what they were looking for and we suspect they already have a market for the jewels. The female hostage was taken outside but released when the raiders made their getaway in a blue BMW, CCTV footage shows the duo leaving the jewellers, they fired two warning shots into the ground before escaping. The robbers' escape almost came to an abrupt end when their blue BMW crashed into a taxi in a nearby street (Dover Street.) As the driver and punters from a nearby pub gave chase, one of the suspects fired off another round into the ground to warn everyone off. They abandoned the car, switching to a silver Mercedes (LV06 HFA.) before changing cars again, climbing into a blue VW Sharan (RA07 XEV.) The men are thought to have passed the stolen jewellery to a waiting motorcyclist, who made a quick getaway. At least two other men were acting as getaway drivers in three cars, police believe. They have yet to be caught. Detectives have arrested a 50-year-old man in 'connection.' He was held on suspicion of robbery outside a house in Ilford in east London on Monday, Scotland Yard said. He has been released on bail pending further inquiries. I do not know how this is connected. The first suspect was described as white, about 30, with a slim build, dark hair with a well-combed side parting, light stubble on his face and between 5ft 10 and 6ft tall. He was wearing a grey suit, white shirt and tie. The second was described as black, also in his 30s, 6ft tall, more well built than the first suspect, and with very short afro hair. He was also wearing a grey suit and white open-neck shirt. The suspects' details have been circulated to all ports and airports but police believe they are likely to have organised an escape route and may already have left the country. A loaded gun was found at the scene later by police, however, police believe it was not used during the robbery. Also, the suspects are unknown to police and so their DNA will not be on the police database, thus ruling out any forensic evidence. Crime doesn't pay...... or does it?
