these stockhausen debates are so tiresome. music is art with sound; therefore, this is music. whether you think it's shit is not relevant.

I can't believe the level of stupidity in these comments.

So do other musicians, but why is THIS music? Does it honestly, enrich your life?

instead of making up eloquent excuses or try to make sense of just call it a pretetious load of crap some times a whale is just a whale

Quite. Stockhausen's present status in world music will not decay; thus implying that Steinburger's criticisms of the specifics involved in the inspired timbres featured in Stimmung can be disgarded with irrefutable evidence. Also, in some way do we not all share a small part of Karlheinz's love of clashing souds- highlighting man's inhumanity to man? Music is music and should not require a reason for it's own existence. Music is there for whatever reason you want it to be.

Your last paragraph is right on. I'm not familiar with Steinburger's criticisms but I think that refutation would be irrelevant since we are talking about aesthetics. Despite thousands of years of trying to rope that into a system of classification (with some success and the effort is certainly necessary) we'll always come to the ineffability of the experience. A bunch of drunks in a bar waxing nostalgic while "Louie, Louie" plays on the jukebox is the same as this, because it's their experience

All of this fails miserably when artists like KS forget the reality they are purportedly interpreting. The 9/11 quote revealed his pathetic solipsism. The reason why Wilfred Owens´ anti-war poems are so powerful is because HE WENT TO WAR (and died there). He wasn´t sitting in a cafe with friends spinning off fantasies about how attacks are works of art. This is why many people can't take post-modern art seriously, because in many cases it's produced by people who live in a playpen.

I know this because I studied with Ruth Anderson in the early 80s and I met all of these people. With exceptions they were mostly childish in their attitudes and were absolutely convinced that they had 'The Truth'. For a crowd so dedicated to openmindedness they were some of the most intolerant and dogmatic people around. For a few of them art was political warfare. That's their choice of course but to me art should reflect reality not replace it.
