Friends for Life 2009 - Evie & GemBackEvie Crooks and GEM. At seven years of age, Evie is the youngest recipient to date of a hearing dog specially trained to help a deaf child. In 2007 when the pilot project was set up, Evie was lucky enough to be one of 12 children involved in the study. Gem was placed with Evie in October 2008 and even in a space of a few months, has already made a huge difference to her life. The most exciting event is that Evie is now sleeping in her own room for the first time ever, as she now feels safer with Gem by her side. The whole family have noticed a dramatic improvement with Evie's general behaviour and she has much more independence and confidence at home and in her school life. Her mum summed up the difference that Gem has made on their lives. After a walk one day, Evie and Gem lay on the lounge rug together both totally shattered. She listened without Evie knowing as she whispered to Gem how much she loved her. That says it all really, doesn't it? Service Provider is Telecom Express. For customer services, call 020 7053 7013.
