MERRY CLAYTON- "GIMME SHELTER" (1970)

Back

Street Fighting Woman! Merry was the woman dueting with Mick on the Rolling Stones' original 1969 recording of "Gimme Shelter". Who better to interpret it the following year than Merry herself? She's accompanied on keys by her friend, the immeasurably important Billy Preston, who was as much the Sixth Stone as the Fifth Beatle in these years. The galloping roar of guitar may be David T. Walker, although the album credits don't clarify. She was born on Christmas Day, and what a gift! "War, children, is just a shot away/ See the pious sweeping my very streets today..." Any resemblence between the events in this video and the present day is entirely up to you... Be sure to send some love to Merry on her personal MySpace page!: http://www.myspace.com/themerryclayton (All rights reserved. Fan-made video for promotion of the artist.) Tym Stevens

I had this album, until it was stolen, I personally think the "Let it Bleed" Stones version would have never been remembered as the seminal tune it is, without her. I do love her voice and version, but I hate to say this, I wish she could have done this exact version with Keith's guitar, that would be perfection......

This is phenomenal! Her "rape, murder" bit in the Stones version is a lot more effective though, really puts the fear in you.

Dear Funknroll: As someone who grew up with Stones version and visuals of Meredith Hunter being killed at Altamont, I want to thank you for exposing this solo version of Merry's. And you have composed a brilliant montage, one that can almost embody this year's election too, right? Thank you! (2)

I always wondered who did those vocals on the stones version. On that version it is the most amazing sound I have ever heard!

Definitely one of the most under acknowleged singers of my time. Her renditions of "Southern Man" and "Grandma's Hands" on the one album of hers that I once had are just tremendous. Thanks for posting!
