Spoems - Bread - Aubrey

Bread - Aubrey

Back

"Guitar Man" was the fifth album released by Bread, in 1972. "Aubrey" was the fourth song on Side A of the album and was released as a single in early 1973. The single lasted 11 weeks on Hot 100 charts, peaking at position 15. The songs features no drumming but relies on various melodic resources such as orchestral strings, classical guitar and a music box. Lyrics talk about a man's infatuation for a girl with the unusual name of Aubrey and his inability to act on his feelings, and furthermore Gates' liking the name. It's regarded as one of Bread's most melancholic songs. It is also responsible for many newborn baby girls being named Aubrey in 1973. I've always imagined the singer as being a bit shy and Aubrey as being a little pretty, a little charming, and perhaps a little quirky. Recently, while re-watching the French film, "Amelie," I thought of this song, which resulted in this video. I hope you like it... A note about the opening shot of the bird with the crust of bread. The original vinyl album had a cardboard insert which had a photo of a man's hand holding a crust of bread, while tiny sparrows fluttered about and rested on his hand to eat the bread. Since my scanner is on the blink, I looked online for a copy of the photo, but didn't find one. But I thought the picture I used in the video was a nice substitute. Aubrey (Words and music by David Gates) And Aubrey was her name, A not so very ordinary girl or name. But who's to blame? For a love that wouldn't bloom For the hearts that never played in tune. Like a lovely melody that everyone can sing, Take away the words that rhyme it doesn't mean a thing. And Aubrey was her name. We tripped the light and danced together to the moon, But where was June? No, it never came around. If it did, it never made a sound. Maybe I was absent or was listening too fast, Catching all the words, but then the meaning going past, And God, I miss the girl, And I'd go a thousand times around the world just to be Closer to her than to me. And Aubrey was her name, I never knew her, but I loved her just the same, I loved her name. Wish that I had found the way And the reasons that would make her stay. I have learned to lead a life apart from all the rest. If I can't have the one I want, I'll do without the best. And how I miss the girl And I'd go a million times around the world just to say She had been mine for a day.

Just curious, did your parents get the name from this song?

You continue to be a wealth of musical knowledge and inspiration. I absolutely love the melody of this song, but when I watch your video and read the lyrics, it puts the song into a completely new perspective. The fact you can watch a film and relate it to a certain song is pure genius. Keep 'em coming my dear friend.

Hey Robert, I'm a big fan of Bread, too. Could you put some of David Gates's solo stuff on here too? P.S. I LOVE the single version (and the album medley) of "Clouds". Ever heard of it? It's just great.
