So my question is this, when Paul smiles at Wynton at 7:24, when Wynton comes back in, is he smiling b/c they just made a mistake or b/c they just did something really cool that no one else knows about -- a musical joke?

I think it was because Wynton and the drummer come in bang with a hit that Paul might have been surprised at. it was so quick and hip when they came in, and not in the "expected" place perhaps.

They don't memorize each note. They're very aware of the chords that they are playing and know the scales and transitions from chord to chord. Add to that an ability to create new melodies from the chords and of course to do all that while "swinging" and you've got jazz!

This is available on DVD, although that wasn't the case in mid-2006 when this was posted. It's been put out by the Jazz Icons label on a DVD called "John Coltrane Live in '60, '61 & '65". This is the from the '60 portion.

Hahah. They don't! Beauty of Jazz is that it's mostly improvisational when you're in a small group. You oughta pick up an instrument and learn some jazz, man!

Wynton Kelly is awesome.

Yes, there's a secret "jazz scale." Every great jazz musician played the same scale in every tune to create their amazing solos.
If I told you the scale, I'd have to kill you.
