Spoems - The Paupers - If I Told My Baby

The Paupers - If I Told My Baby

Back

Awesome 1960's classic Canadian garage band song. The Paupers were one of the more predominant Toronto groups in the mid 60's to combine the day's carefree attitude with experimental studio sounds.

The Paupers were a great band and "Magic People" is an amazing record. But "If I Told My Baby" was not on the album. Instead, this was a single from 1965, released before Adam Mitchell joined the group. The pre-Verve singles are very rare. I believe Skip Prokop sings lead on this track. Oh, and from most accounts, thier set at Monterey was a shambles, with malfunctioning gear and Denny tripping on LSD. Anyhoo, a great band, vastly underrated.

I just checked your age! Where on earth did you hear of this band? They were my very favourite when I hung around downtown Yorkville in the 60's. I liked Think I Care. Can you upload a few more tunes?

Oops, thought it said 28. Now that I know better, you probably had older siblings who listened to it.

The Paupers played quite a lot at the El Patio...I had a membership across the road at the Mynah Bird where the Mild & Bitter were doing covers of Dylan...down the end of Yorkville and there was a pizza place on Avenue Road open all hours...a great time for music in T.O.
