Serb is the old name for Slav. It's found most commonly in past scripures. "Sclaveni" was a latin word used for us, not sure what it mean't but it's our word for 'Glorious ones' so i see why we continue to call ourselves by that name.

Yeah, and the Croats and Serbs were different groups even before the great schism, the muslims are simply serb-croat converts (turkified)

Your correct.
However, they were just bearly beggining to be converted to Orthodoxy by the Western Roman Empire (constantinople)
So technically the Slavic tribe was invited. (back then there was no difference to my knowledge :)
