I understand Christianity as a belief system which promotes humility and public service, and denounces harsh judgment and violence (God will judge and punish a sinner, no other person can do that.) Many citizens of the United States follow some pretty repulsive and perverted "literalist" misinterpretations of the Bible, so I see where your dismissive is coming from, but I encourage you to look beyond the ignorance of many Americans to see that Progressive Christians definitely do "exist."
