Julie Moss competing in the 1982 Hawaii Ironman Triathlon

Back

In 1982, Julie Moss became worldwide famous during the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, in which she competed as part of her research for her exercise physiology thesis. At approximately two miles before the finish line, she came severely dehydrated. She staggered and crawled towards the end of the course, only to be passed moments before the finish line by Kathleen McCartney. Her struggle to finish the Ironman was broadcasted live around the world by ABC Sports, and provided inspiration to many.

to be willing to crawl to obtain a goal you have is amazing.

Yes she did. I remember it too, and the Wide World of Sports commentator was sure to point it out to the whole wide world. How we laughed!

Hey Bethnjulia, you sre an idiot. Kathleen had to finish her race. And for the record, doesn't matter if Julile finished first, you can't have 3 people helping you up every time you fall. Figure it out you arse !!

Yeah u r correct both are doing a race! the only way I would stop it would be if it was my brother or something like that, but I would still give the first step to the finish line lol.

It's not a matter of being stupid... and it doesn't matter if she didn't finish first either... All that matters she managed to gather all her strength, and courage, and determination, and faith, and perseverance, to finish what she started. And I think, that's a great lesson for all of us ! She did not give up, she persevered.

I watched this video in tears and rage. What I saw Kathleen McCartney do was the greatest lack of sportsmanship I have ever seen.

Ironically, now that I've done an Ironman, this video does not move me at all. before, it made me cry whenever I watched it. Talk about a hollow pursuit. For me anyways.
