muay thai is a modernized version of muay boran. Just think of how nasty the sport was before it was made into it's "safe" counterpart. Also, Tae kwon do was formed from a practitioner of tang soo do who sucked because his kicks were weak(simply put) and formed tae kwon do, accenting everything on speed instead.

-yeah Muay Thai is the watered down version of Muay Boran. The stance is lower and arms are more out.
