Betty Hutton - Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief

Back

Most musical fans point to Julie Andrews or Judy Garland as their favorite actresses. But I'm all about the underseen, underappreciated genius of Betty Hutton. This clip of her eye-popping (and eye-stretching) performance in a B-musical comedy serves as a light introduction to her style. Hutton's most notable film role was the part of Annie Oakley in the 1950 musical of "Annie Get Your Gun." One of her best known songs (Blow a Fuse, later renamed It's Oh So Quiet) was covered by Icelandic artist, Bjork ( Björk ).

Betty Hutton wasn't neglected during her active career-she was one of the TOP singer/actresses of the 40's-including a classic comedy by Preston Sturges. Despite her beauty, she went for brassy vocal antics, self-parody,& nearly manic comedy. She seemed desperately eager to please. In "Sunset Blvd," the studio chiefs suggest Bill Holden turn his script into a "female baseball movie" since "Paramount is always looking for Betty Hutton vehicles." Once she quite films, she plunged into obscurity.

Good summation of Betty Hutton's career. Awesome talent, but boy could she come on strong.

Weird video, but cool.

Interesting how in those days, singers often sang songs even though the words clearly indicate they were meant to be sung by the opposite gender. This is a good example.

back then entertainers weren't so crazy about songs...you'd often hear 3 or more singers singing the same one...they each had different arrangements so they all sounded different...now one singer would sue another because they "stole" their song

She is so talented and beautiful. I bet she did the best she could to raise her kids, and hopefully someday she will appreciated by family. We love her.

Does anyone know why her 3 daughters would not have anything to do with her, and neither of them went to her funeral? That is so strange, no matter went on between them, she was still the women who gave them life, and deserved that last respect.

In interviews late in her life she said she wished she had been a better mother. She didn't seem to blame her kids for the way they felt. Sad.

I've been tracking this lady and she is amazing, I love her voice and those dance moves. I never knew how she was but now I want to know more she's fantastic.
